Memorial Paver Patio and More
The Foundation Funds Construction Projects

by Carolyn Warloe

If you have walked into the Fireside Room at church in the first half of April 2024, it would be hard for you to miss the construction work going on in the atrium. First, the old concrete patio and some of the rock and mud under it had to be removed. What a mess that created! (The contractor did a great job of protecting the carpet and flooring inside.) Replacing the 55-year-old patio with its large cracks, poor drainage, and uneven surface has been a major project overseen this spring by the Property Committee. The new atrium ground surface will be composed of pavers which Grace members may have engraved as memorials.

In the middle of dealing with the patio, it was discovered that the belltower had major wood rot and it was no longer safe to ring the bell, which originally hung atop what is now Ronnenkamp Hall. The belltower has been removed and will eventually be replaced. The bell is sitting in the northeast corner of the atrium waiting for its new tower. The eventual results should be wonderful.

The Foundation Board was pleased to approve a grant requested by the Property Committee to provide matching funds (2 to 1) to help with the cost of this renovation. The Foundation pledged up to $14,000 to the project to match $7,000 that would be raised from donations. As the custodian of Memorial gifts received by the church, the Foundation Board felt that this was an appropriate use of some of those funds. Additional money will come from the Ronnenkamp Fund. Many of you contributed to the funds that were matched. This was a major project that had not been included in the Grace budget process. It is really a blessing that for the last 29 years, Grace has had the resources of the Foundation to fund needs not foreseen or included in the yearly budget.

This is not the only construction project this spring supported by the Foundation. At the Board’s last meeting, we agreed to help fund the renovation of staff housing at Camp Lutherwood. While the Foundation is contributing only a portion of the funds needed to renovate the staff housing, the Board is pleased to be part of this project. The Foundation has also received a request for a grant from Luther House to fund a portion of the replacement of their single-pane windows. While the Board hasn’t acted on this request pending receipt of further information, it seems likely that Luther House will receive a positive response.

Since its inception, the Foundation has funded over $700,000 worth of grants. This is made possible by the continued donations to the Foundation and the earnings on its investments. As always, special thanks to Alice and Carl Ronnenkamp for the initial gift that became the Grace Lutheran Church Foundation.

How to Request a Grant from the Grace Lutheran Church Foundation

If you have a project that needs some additional funds, you might consider asking the Foundation for a grant. If you visit the Grace Lutheran web site, and click on "Our Partners," you will be able to select the Grace Foundation. You will then find a link for Requesting Funding. The form is available to be printed and then filled in or filled out online and then printed. There is also a link to the full policies and guidelines for funding projects.

The Foundation has funded a wide variety of projects both in the church and with community organizations. If it is funding for a community association, a member of Grace Lutheran must sponsor the request. If you have any questions about requesting funds, please feel free to contact any of the members of the Board for additional assistance. The Foundation meets about once a month to consider requests.
