Outside Requests and
"Thivent Choice" Dollars

By Carolyn Warloe

If you are a member of Grace Lutheran Church, this is your Foundation. The Grace Lutheran Foundation Board would like to receive input from you about how the Board is distributing the Foundation's funds. The Foundation was established to support Grace and the mission of Grace "to follow Christ into our community and world manifesting with caring hearts and helping hands the good news of the Kingdom of God." More than 95% of grants funded by the Foundation have gone to projects directly related to Grace, but we have given funds to some organizations outside of the church. Usually a congregation member has sponsored these grant requests. The Board is currently developing policies regarding funding requests from organizations not affiliated with Grace such as the South Corvallis Food Bank or Furniture Share.

The Foundation has recently become a "Thrivent Choice" organization. This means we are on the Thrivent website and if you have "Thrivent Choice" Dollars, you can direct them to the Foundation. We may also be more visible on the web to groups outside of our congregation. Combined with a small but growing presence in the Corvallis community as a resource for funds, the Foundation may see an increase in the number of requests from outside Grace.

The Board takes our responsibility as stewards of the Foundation's funds seriously. You can visit our home page and click on "Projects Funded" at the bottom of the page to see how we have used the Foundation's money from 1994 through 2015. The projects for 2016 are not yet on the website.

Here are proposed Policies for Grant Requests by organizations not directly affiliated with Grace Lutheran Church:

  1. All requests must be made or sponsored by a member of the congregation.
  2. The mission of the organization requesting the funds must be closely aligned with the mission of Grace Lutheran Church.
  3. Grants given to organizations not affiliated with Grace shall not exceed 10% of all grants made by the Foundation.
  4. Priority for funds will always be to programs and projects affiliated with Grace.

Let us know what you think of these policies. Comments may be e-mailed to foundation@grace97330.org or dropped by the church office.

End of Year Planning

As we begin planning the remainder of the year and remembering all the wonderful blessings we've received, our thoughts turn to thinking about all the giving and (to be honest) receiving of gifts that come with the holiday season. We have so many blessings to be thankful for this Christmas season and one of the best ways to share those blessings is in the act of giving.

Please give some thought to the Grace Lutheran Church Foundation during your end of the year planning, there may even be a tax advantage as you consider gifting to the Grace Lutheran Church Foundation (you need to check with your tax advisor for how this affects your individual situation).

If you have any questions please ask a member of the Grace Lutheran Church Foundation Board.
