"Leaving a Legacy"
Workshop Report

By Neil Christensen and Anne Orwick

The Grace Lutheran Church Foundation hosted The Rev. Keith Nelson, Gift Planning Director for the ELCA Foundation, on Sunday, October 9, 2011. Pastor Nelson delivered the sermon at both services, led a Bible study on giving, and presented a seminar entitled "Leaving a Legacy" following a light lunch in Ronnenkamp Hall. Thirty persons attended the luncheon and seminar, including Oregon ELCA Synod Mission Gift Developers Bonny Groshong and Tonia Lindquist.

The ELCA Foundation exists to strengthen the financial capacities of ELCA ministries, congregations, synods, agencies and institutions. This goal is accomplished by:

  1. Encouraging and facilitating life-long stewardship through current and planned giving,
  2. Offering financial education, resources, and support services, and
  3. Providing endowment management services.

In the seminar, Pastor Nelson explained that the ELCA Foundation can receive many types of gifts, including cash, life insurance, qualified retirement plans, real estate, and securities. Gifting options include bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, donor advised funds, donor-directed distribution agreements, and memorial endowment funds. Among the resources available to Grace Lutheran Church members and friends free of charge are estate planning workbooks and information sheets. Two resources that will be of interest to many are the "Will and Trust" and "Important Notes About My Estate" workbooks. Please contact one of the members of the Grace Foundation Board if you need assistance in downloading the resources available.

Estate planning is for the rich? Wrong!

Estate planning is helpful to just about everyone. Some people have larger estates than others, but each person has an estate. The smaller the estate, the more important it is to conserve the property.

Estate planning is long-term money management. It means listing your assets and making legal arrangements to pass them on as you decide: to your family, friends, congregation, or other charitable institutions. It is a way of extending yourself, your influence, your hopes and your aspirations.
