Legacy Planning, Medical Directives, Funerals and Memorial Services PART I by Anne Orwick | |||||
Starting on May 9 and going through May 23, the Grace Foundation sponsored three Adult Forums at Grace, called "End of Life Issues for Lutherans."
This was a point discussed at a Congregational Endowment Seminar attended by Hal Dick and Anne Orwick on April 25, at Community of Hope Lutheran Church in Wilsonville. The keynote speaker was Keith Nelson from the ELCA Foundation. Some other points discussed at this seminar: On May 9th, Charlie Owen, a representative for Thrivent Financial, led a discussion on "Living and Planning a Meaningful Legacy." Charlie explained how to identify your values, clarify your legacy intentions and how to create your legacy goals. For some people, stewardship is their first priority; steward - ship of their time, talents and their treasures. A person's values drive their decisions and actions, throughout every day of their lives. A legacy is generally defined as something of financial worth that a person passes on to others when he or she dies. Sharing your legacy through Grace Foundation is a wonderful opportunity for your values to continue on to great promise long after you are gone. Thrivent Financial are the professional experts to provide you with advice, support and the legal documents. May 16th Dr. Jenny Olsen presented to our forum audience "A Summary of Oregon's Advance Directive Law." |
A lively discussion covered all your choices at the end of your life, how you will get care that assures your comfort and dignity, and how to fill out the Advance Directive Form. Dr. Jenny explained how communication is the key, whether or not to use an Advanced and where to post this important document. It is very important for each of us, if we are in this situation of being ill and/or elderly, to appoint a Health Care Representative and to inform your physician, relatives and friends of this choice. Also be sure to communicate your wishes to your relatives and friends so everyone is "in the know." Also on, May 16th, Mike Terwilliger of Twin Oaks Funeral Home and Cremation Services gave a very informative talk concerning "Funeral Pre-Arrangement Planning." He explained that a variety of service arrangements are available. These arrangements can be quite simple or elaborate depending on your personal needs, family traditions or religious observances, for either burial or cremation choices. Mike described the various choices between memorial services, funeral services and/or graveside committal services. And a word on funding of arrangements. An important concept is to make these arrangements ahead of time with the expert and compassionate guidance of the funeral professional, so your loved ones are not left with |
