Elections, Campaign Promises
and Our Foundation

by Carolyn Warloe

My neighbor always displays numerous campaign signs in front of his house. As I walked by them last month, they left me thinking about all the campaign promises made by candidates, to improve schools, public services, health care, etc., usually without a hint of how those projects will be funded. Promising a free college education was very popular this election cycle. The Federal government seems to be on a "spend now and figure out how to pay for it later" plan. The state and local governments seem to think that they can pass costs on with those additional fees or fee increases, i.e., taxes. Many families use plastic to buy now with no real plan for paying off the credit cards. Even our own congregational council makes an estimate of giving and then prays the money will be there when the bills come due.
All of these are in direct contrast to the Foundation. We only spend money that we have. We even specify the fund,
or account, it is coming from when we vote to grant a request for funds. Grace's Foundation has had a minimum of available funds to give away since the recession and stock market correction devalued our investments. However, the good news is the Foundation once again has endowed earnings and
other un-endowed money to fund requests. Thirty thousand dollars are now available, not that we want to rush out and spend that money all at once.
This recouping of funds leads us to a very pleasant problem. Unlike the politicians who have ideas and no funds, we have funds and need ideas. Maybe we should stick a couple of campaign signs in the lawn by the front door of the church. They could read: "God has made funds available" and "Ask that you may receive." The Foundation board only gives away money when someone asks for it. That does not mean that we fund all requests. General budget items are usually not funded by the Foundation. The Foundation was established to improve and expand the mission of the church. If you have a great idea that needs some financial help, check Guidelines for Requesting Funding or talk with any of the board members to find out how to request a grant.

Let us be glad in our abundance
and use it wisely.

Some of the Questions to
Answer in a Request for Funds
  • What is the project to be funded?
  • What is the overall budget for the project and what portion are you asking the Foundation to fund? What other sources of funding have been considered?
  • What is the ministry to be supported, expected results, and the relationship of the ministry to the mission of Grace Lutheran Church?
  • Is the funding requested as an outright grant, on a matching-funds basis, or in some other capacity?
  • What is the time-line, if the funding is for something that will be ongoing?
It may be helpful to attend a Board meeting when requesting funds, especially for new projects.

The full guidelines are available on the Foundation web site.
