Not so with Grace Lutheran Church's Foundation. It's important not to name a church foundation, your "[Church Name] Endowment Fund." Then people will assume all monies given to that Endowment Fund will be endowed. Being endowed means the principal is not touched and just the earned interest of that principal amount can be used for a prescribed purpose.
This was a point discussed at a Congregational Endowment Seminar attended by Hal Dick and Anne Orwick on April 25, at Community of Hope Lutheran Church in Wilsonville. The keynote speaker was Keith Nelson from the ELCA Foundation. Some other points discussed at this seminar:
Part I Have you ever wondered what your legacy might be? You can leave a legacy that makes a difference for the world by supporting ministries important to you. Your will and long-term financial plan are statements of faith that continue beyond your lifetime. Why Do I Need a Will? A will can insure that assets you have worked a lifetime to accumulate are distributed according to your wishes. If you do not leave written directions in your will, the state will distribute your assets. People of all ages need a will, which can be a stewardship vehicle that allows you to: 1) plan for the future of your loved ones and name guardians for your minor children; and 2) express your faith through support for people and ministries important to you.
