Mark and Mary Jones* have been giving to their congregation for years. Their annual generosity has been such that its absence will be felt when they are gone. Mark and Mary realize this and are doing something to make sure their giving never runs dry. They are taking steps, through their will, to create a gift to their church in the form of an endowment. A portion of their estate will be gifted so that it will generate annual gifts that will in effect continue the giving they are doing now. Mark and Mary like the idea of an endowment and this is why: 1. Endowments are Perpetual Like an artesian well, endowments keep giving and giving and giving. They allow people like Mark and Mary to "lock in" their giving. Buildings may crumble and people will come and go, but endowments last. Each year, interest will be used to continue the support that Mark and Mary gave this congregation. What a wonderful legacy to leave behind! 2. Endowments are Protected Endowment funds are set aside and kept separate from operating and capital fund accounts. Mark and Mary have the assurance that their endowed gift will be secure. The written endowment document assures them that the terms will be carefully followed. |
The Foundation has developed sound policies for creating and managing endowment funds. This information is available upon request. Also, our synod's Director of Planned Giving, Tricia Larsen, is available to show you a variety of ways you can use the vehicles of gift planning to make an endowment dream come true - whether now through a current gift, or later through your estate plan. She will be happy to visit or correspond with you about this exciting area of philanthropy. Call her at (503) 413-1405 or email her at Blessed2Give@cs.com.
(* Note: Mark and Mary Jones are fictitious names.) In the Financial Report, you may notice a project entitled "Grace Center for Adult Day Services Endowment". Several years ago, a member of the Grace congregation created an endowment within the Grace Lutheran Church Foundation. The gift was intended to help support Grace Center following its move to a new location. Now, Grace Center will receive a payment of the income and interest generated by the endowed funds every year in perpetuity. Grace Center will forever benefit from the thoughtful planning of this member of the congregation. |
