Revisiting Our Mission

by Michael Beachley

For more than three decades, the GLC Foundation has had a major impact on the mission of this congregation. Beginning with a very large bequest from Alice and Carl Ronnenkamp, other large donations from Clara Storvick and from Milt and Billy Larson, and followed by dozens of donations and memorials from a broad range of GLC members and friends, the Foundation has grown into a substantial instrument of God's Grace. It is humbling to see how much good has come from this marvelous institution. Here is a very short example of the kinds of programs and initiatives that have resulted and have been supported by the Foundation over the years.

The stated mission of the Foundation is to be "In Service to the Ministry of Christ's Church." At the last meeting of the Foundation board of directors, we posed for ourselves the question of how well the various grants have supported this mission. We asked, for example, whether bricks-and-mortar expenditures meet the mission's goals. We wondered whether these supported programs should focus more directly on mission-centered activities. We posed for ourselves the extent to which this board and the Congregational Council have a clear and unified understanding of what constitutes our mission in terms of how the gifts of the Foundation are to be used..

It occurs to the board that it would be of great benefit to us and to our successors to encourage a Congregational Conversation on what all of this means. For example, to what extent might the Foundation entertain challenge programs that focus on extending the power of our mission rather than simply receiving requests that are inspired by individuals and outside entities? We posed the possibility that perhaps the Foundation might be more of an initiator of programs and ideas for action.

The board came to no answers and didn't intend to do so. The discussion was simply a responsibility of the board to clarify from time to time our mission and reason for being. We conclude by inviting this Congregation to enter into the discussion as well and to think and pray about this issue, and certainly for the Congregation Council to do the same. In other words, how can this marvelous Foundation be used better as we transition into a new phase in the life of the church?

Your thoughts and comments are cordially invited. Let's talk.
