A Day of Commemoration By Michael Beachley | ||||
This important day of celebration and commemoration has a history spanning 1800 years. It is a "holiday" in the literal sense, a Holy Day. This particular day is a part of the tradition of recognizing all those who have preceded us, who have brought each of us into this world, who have endowed in all of us the product of their lives before us, and stand as a reminder that we are integral living parts of this glorious continuum of God's Great Creation. This Holy, or Hallowed, Day is preceded by its own Hallowed Eve, like Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, or Christmas Eve for the birth of Jesus. These "Eves" are often an integral part of the holiday itself. We have come to call this one Halloween. And it is an evening wherein the imps and troublemakers of the Cosmos take their opportunities to run amok in the community. They will even negotiate a "mordida," or a little bite by which we can purchase a pass by handing out something of value such as ... say ... a little piece of candy. And the imps and troublemakers are even pretty straight-forward in their demands for the bribe. Trick or treat. Easy peasy. Cross my palms. Pay up or else. And when we pay them off, they are on their way ... until the next Hallowed Eve ... we hope. And then we come to the next day that is far more precious, more personal for ourselves. All Saints Day. And after having escaped the clutches of the imps and troublemakers, we are free to devote our sweetest prayers and our best memories of our ancestor Saints, and to do so with gratitude and love. Every year for the last 26 years the Grace Lutheran Church Foundation invites you to use the Foundation as a vehicle of commemoration of our Saints by contributing to the Memorial Fund of the Foundation. This particular Fund is the source of support for programs, events, and recognitions that occur in the life of the Church. For example, the Congregation has been gifted with stunning and beautiful art, the acquisition of musical instruments, worship support such as communion articles, bibles, and hymnals, library support, pipe organ and piano support, music literature, and so many, many other memorials over the decades. In each case of acquisition, the Foundation Board determines the actual memorial associated with the expenditure. A record exists in our Church archives. Continued on next page

A Day of Commemoration Continued from previous page You are cordially invited to participate this All Saints Day in a contribution to the Memorial Fund. And just to remind, there are other Funds within the Foundation to which contributions may be directed. The Grace Lutheran Church Foundation is a precious asset of this Congregation, and it is, itself, a gift to Grace Lutheran Church from Saints before us who established and nurtured this Congregation. Please join us and have a blessed All Saints Day. Oh, right, lest I forget. Happy Halloween.
