Maundy Thursday
“Maundy” comes from the same Latin root as Mandate. It refers to the part of the gospel text when Jesus gives us a new command, mandatum novum, to love one another. In this service we celebrate Jesus’ institution of the Lord’s Supper. To demonstrate the new command, we have a foot washing ceremony. Since some are timid about that, we offer an option to wash people’s hands as well.

Good Friday
This service marks the day of the death of Christ on the cross, a sign of God’s great love for the world. (Jn 3. 16) We call it “good,” because this death produced a happy exchange. All our sins were exchanged for the good grace of our Savior, Jesus Christ, In return for that good grace, Christ took our sins upon himself becoming obedient to death and the grave, thus accomplishing our salvation. This service features an opportunity to pray at the foot of the cross.

Easter Vigil
This Service has its root in Early Christianity. It begins in the Artium with a new fire. A procession with candles takes us into the darkened sanctuary. Texts of Deliverance are read, insterspered with Songs. We reaffirm our Baptisms. We restore the altar and celebrate the first Eucharist of the resurrection. All the joy of Easter unfolds on this holy night as we celebrate Christ’s Passover from death to life.

[i] Sunday Pastor’s Class

Pastor Wendell Hendershott has been leading a discussion group, “Beyond Sacraments,” which is usually held on the second Sunday of each month. That won’t be possible in April, because of the Choir Cantata, so we are considering moving it one week earlier, to April 6. At present, the group is looking into spiritual practices that have borrowed from or have been rooted in other denominations and religions. Each session is a “stand alone” topic . Previous class attendance is not required. We will continue on April 6 (possibly), and May 11. Classes are also being considered for the fall.

[ii]Soup Suppers will have an international theme, “Beyond Samaria,” to go along with our Lenten Lessons. International soups are encouraged, but not required. Thanks for those who have already signed up, in the Grace entry, to bring soup. We only need a couple more, although we still need a few folks to bring bread and sign up for set up and clean up.
